A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 40s was found dead at a Grade Two listed pub.

Officers were called at 3.30am today to reports of an incident at the 15th century Magpie pub in Little Stonham near Ipswich, Suffolk.

Suffolk Police later confirmed that a 52-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Forensics carried out an investigation in the pub but detectives have not yet disclosed when a post-mortem is being held to establish how the woman died.

Retired gardener Kenneth Kinsey, 69, who lives opposite the pub, said parties at the pub often go on past 3am on Friday and Saturday nights.

He said: ‘It is a little annoying as there can be some noise when people go home, but we live on a busy road so we have a lot of noise from traffic anyway.’

Mr Kinsey spotted six police cars and an ambulance when he got up at 5.30am and said forensics arrived at 8am.

The Magpie pub is one of only a handful of pubs in the UK to have a sign which spans the road beside the pub.

Traffic on the busy A140 road goes underneath the sign which is suspended on a wooden frame constructed over the road.

It is believed that a real magpie in a cage was hung over the road many years ago – but now there is just a metal sign of a magpie.
