A highly-educated IT specialist has been jailed for nine years for the murder of a beauty blogger, doctor, and part-time sex worker in Russia.
Maxim Gareyev, 33, a graduate of Britain’s Open University, will serve his sentence in a Russian penal colony after he admitted stabbing 24-year-old Ekaterina Semochkina to death in Moscow.
Gareyev told investigators that he attacked Semochkina after she insulted his wealth, sexual prowess and personality after they met for a paid sex session.
Maxim Gareyev, 33 (left), has been jailed for nine years in a Russian penal colony after he admitted stabbing 24-year-old Ekaterina Semochkina (right) to death in a jealous rage
Semochkina’s body was discovered stuffed into a suitcase in her apartment with the throat slit and stab wounds to her chest in July last year.
The victim’s mother Dr Olga Semochkina, a cardiologist, told a Moscow court how she went to Ekaterina’s flat and found her body after she failed to answer her phone.
‘I saw my daughter lying in a suitcase,’ she said.
‘The big red suitcase was in the middle of the room…. I started to scream.’
Ekaterina’s father Dr Stanislav Semochkin, a urologist, rushed to her side hoping she was still alive, but soon realised she was dead, she said.
Gareyev – who had four degrees including an Open University MBA – claimed he killed Ekaterina after she taunted him.
Semochkina was found naked except for a suspender belt, with her throat slashed and stab wounds to her chest, after Gareyev attacker her in her apartment
Ekaterina, who also went by the name Katya, was a newly-qualified doctor who also worked as a beauty blogger on Instagram where she had 85,000 followers.
She also worked part-time as a sex worker, charging £130 per hour to supplement her earnings.
Gareyev claimed she mocked him for not being as wealthy as other men she knew, for a ‘lack of personality’, and for his failure to satisfy her in bed.
He told the Russian Investigative Committee: ‘(After we had sex) she carried on making jokes about me…’
‘I lost control. I grabbed a knife in the kitchen. She half turned and I struck her….in the neck….’
She tried to escape to the bathroom and lock the door, he said.
‘I pulled her out of the bathroom,’ he said. ‘Her blood was dripping… Then in the corridor she started screaming.
Semochkina, a newly-qualified doctor, also worked as a beauty blogger and supplemented her income with part-time sex work, for which she charged £130 per hour
Gareyev (left being arrested, and right in court) told police that he attacked Semochkina after she insulted his wealth, personality and sexual performance after they met for a paid session
‘I covered her mouth… I stabbed her again, to her chest with a knife.
‘She ran to the living room and started fighting me, but I was in a state that I didn’t feel pain.
‘During the fight she fell down and I struck her twice again…in the neck… She had convulsions and died.’
The victim’s distraught parents, who attended Gareyev’s sentencing, strongly denied that she had worked as a prostitute.
They claimed ‘jealous’ university classmates had posted her picture on escort sites.
There were also allegations that at the time of her death she was being blackmailed over nude pictures which appeared online.
She was close to them and not short of money, they said.
Semochkina’s mother, Dr Olga Semochkina (centre), told how she went to the apartment along with father Stanislav (right) after she failed to answer her phone and found her body
Gareyev apologised to Semochkina’s parents and said he is ‘ashamed of myself’ as he was carted off to jail
Her mother posted a video of her grave, saying: ‘Here she is – our girl.
‘If anyone is interested, take a look. Beautiful and clever….Now just to hug and kiss her, we come to this grave.’
She was killed shortly before she was due to go on a trip to Amsterdam with a ‘lover’ who was reported to be aged 52.
Gareyev was quoted as saying: ‘I want to apologise to Katya’s parents. I regret a lot.
‘I’m very ashamed of myself.
His father Ranit described the sentence as ‘strict’.
