All westbound lanes of I-70 on the Missouri side of the state line remain closed at the Benton Curve, and will likely remain closed through the weekend, after a serious fire under the bridge in the area Thursday.That fire at a homeless camp under a bridge over I-70 claimed the life of one individual. That person has yet to be identified. Engineers were concerned the bridge sustained structural damage during that fire. An inspection revealed “significant damage” to the girders under the center lane of I-70.All inbound lanes of I-70 have been closed before 23rd Street, and traffic is being rerouted by the Missouri Department of Transportation.MoDOT said work has been done to stabilize the center lane of that bridge, however, extensive work will be needed. Crews hope to be able to open the left lane and far-right lane of I-70 by Monday morning, however, the center lane of I-70 will remain closed for quite some time. “With the Chiefs playoff game Sunday night, fans should plan for the westbound I-70 lanes to be closed,” said MoDOT KC District Engineer Chris Redline. “More information will be provided Sunday on the timing of the opening of two lanes as soon as we know.”Crews will also be closing the westbound entrance ramp at 18th Street, and at 23rd Street, to ease traffic flow.
