Team GB women’s football squad sent a statement after cruising past Chile in their Olympic opener last night.

Ellen White’s double eased them to a 2-0 win in their first Group E game in Sapporo yesterday.

The side – primarily made up of England players – had played just one warm-up game together and it is just the second time the Team GB football squad have played at the Olympics.

Five members of the Great Britain women’s squad from London 2012 have joined the team, including Steph Houghton, who has played over 100 times for England.

Meanwhile Georgia Stanway has won high praise from England Women’s boss Phil Neville, who has said the Manchester City player could be among the best in the world.

And Scottish player Caroline Weir, who is signed to Andy Murray’s management agency, hit the headlines last year when she began donating part of her salary towards programs focused on female empowerment through football.

LEAH WILLIAMSON

Leah Williamson, a central defender, has been praised for having every attribute: pace, temperament and time on the ball.

The 24-year-old, from Milton Keynes, has been playing since she was six and has called it her ‘first love and passion’.

The footballer, who plays for Arsensal, has long-dreamed of playing for the Olympics, telling the Evening Standard: ‘I always had a glimmer of hope.

‘I was always considering what other sport I could do, to get myself to be in a position to be an Olympian, and then I settled on football.’

She’ll be joined by her best friend on the England squad, Man City midfielder Keria Walsh, who went through all the junior ranks together and received their first senior call up on the same day in 2017.

She went on to play for Hibernian in her teens and has since been moulded into one of the country’s most- feared midfielders.

In 2020, she hit the headlines after she joined some of the biggest names in world football by signing up to the Common Goal foundation.

Weir joined major figures like Jurgen Klopp, Megain Rapinoe and three of her Scotland team-mates – Jane Ross, Christie Murray and Sophie Howard – in committing cash to help NGOs using football empower young people.

Speaking last month to fan site FourFourTwo, Caroline, who is signed to Andy Murray’s management agency, said representing Great Britain was a ‘big honour’ but nothing something she’d dreamed of doing.

She said: ‘I didn’t associate football with the Olympics – I dreamt of playing at World Cups and European Championships for Scotland, which I’ve been fortunate enough to do.

‘But getting to represent Team GB is such a unique opportunity, and one I’m proud to be part of.’

Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Georgia Stanway, 22, has been praised for her skills on the pitch for years.

She comes from a sporting family. One brother, JP, plays football for Holker Old Boys in the North West Counties League and another, Wyll, appears almost as frequently in the Barrow Evening Mail as she does, with his cricketing performances for Furness.

She credits competition with the two in the garden and on the beach as key to her development, as well as her Blackburn manager AJ Goodwin.

Having grown up idiolising Alan Shearer, she moved away from her hometown aged 16, to pursue her dream of playing football.

Her coaches at City, where she was signed as an 18-year-old from Blackburn Rovers, say it is Stanway’s capacity to do this on any occasion which contributes to the stardust quality.

In 2016, she was nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year. It was the first in a string of nominations for the striker, who has gone on to be named the UEFA Women’s Champions League squad in 2018 and PFA Women's Young Player of the Year in 2019

Stanway’s mother, Joanne, tells of one pre-season at Blackburn in which the then 15-year-old felt her goal-scoring was rusty, after she had missed a few one-on-ones in a friendly. Stanway put her mother in goal and, by her own account, she finished the session ‘black and blue, despite trying to dodge rather than save them’.

Phil Neville hailed her skills in 2019, saying: ‘If she keeps her feet on ground, keeps working hard, and keeps listening, she is going to be one of the best players in world football.’

She is among the handful of players who previously represented Team GB in London 12, where she scored three goals in Great Britain’s four games, including winners against New Zealand and Brazil.

Having started her career playing for Sunderland, she has played over 100 times for the England national team.

Meanwhile Steph’s husband, the former Liverpool and Bradford City defender Stephen Darby, had to retire at 29 following a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease, which came just four months after the pair had married in 2018.

Speaking last month, she praised her husband’s attitude toward the disease, saying: ‘He’s so positive, so pro-active. It’s not about going away and doing things, it’s about doing our normal lives.

‘Seeing our families, seeing our nephews, enjoying it while we can and not letting it affect us as much as we can.’ There are, obviously, tough moments.

Post-Olympics, Houghton may well make more TV appearances, after her debut on Sky’s Monday Night Football last season.
