A motorist who called a female traffic warden a ‘stupid f***ing Welsh mare’ after she gave him an £80 parking ticket has been convicted of a race crime.

Welshman Keith Crute’s furious outburst came after he found the parking ticket on his silver Vauxhall during a day trip to Llanberis in Snowdonia.

The 33-year-old approached Gayle Williams and screamed at her: ‘You’ve just given me a ticket. I’m not paying f***ing £80’, a court heard.

Magistrates heard the traffic warden felt ‘frightened and threatened’ as Crute became even ‘wilder and more abusive’.

Bodycam footage then captured the moment he lost control and called Ms Williams a ‘stupid f***ing Welsh mare’ and spat at her. Crute then drove off with his partner and child but was later arrested by police.

Crute pleaded guilty at Caernarfon Magistrates Court to using racially aggravated threatening words or behaviour intending to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and racially aggravated assault against Ms Williams.

Magistrates ordered him to do 200 hours of unpaid work and 25 days of rehabilitation activity. Crute must also pay £400 compensation to his victim.

In a victim personal statement, Ms Williams said she was sickened by Crute’s behaviour. She said that she had never been spat at before and admitted she was worried about catching Covid.

The warden had been working in and around Llanberis on July 21 and issued Crute’s silver Vauxhall car a parking ticket. There were 30 cars parked illegally and she spent an hour issuing tickets, the court heard.

A probation officer said Crute, of Bangor, said that he had not meant to be racist.

Liz Jones, defending, said the motorist apologised for his outburst. She said he had financial problems and felt the parking ticket was ‘unjust’.

Chairman of the bench Peter Talbot said: ‘It was a particularly nasty incident to a person carrying out her duties. We all know the problems of Covid. It must have been quite a frightening experience for her.’
