A shirtless man smashed through a Notting Hill Tesco Metro’s glass doors with a bicycle just days before carnival – as ‘terrified’ shoppers watched on.
The bare-chested man had an argument with a security guard at around 9pm at the Tesco Metro store on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, west London, yesterday.
He was drunk when he came in to the store with two friends, according to one witness, and a security guard was forced to kick him out.
But when the door was closed behind him the man grabbed a bicycle and started hitting it in to the panes of glass in the entrance.
Shoppers who had been browsing the shelves at the back of the store quickly rushed to the front to see what the commotion was.
As one woman shouts ‘sorry is anyone in the shop a first aider’, staff and security try to keep the man from coming back inside the store, the video shows.
While the man repeatedly forces the bicycle in to the glass, causing it to completely shatter, staff rush trolleys in front of the door to block him from entering the shop.
‘Everybody was terrified because there were people who could not understand if it was just one person,’ a witness said.
‘They couldn’t realise if it was one guy or a gang, so they were basically terrified. All the staff were telling them to stay away. There was a moment of panic.’
All four panes of glass in the door to the Portobello Road shop were destroyed by the man after he got in to an argument with a security guard. When he was thrown out he reacted violently
Customers crowd together around the tills as security watch the man, who is outside, from just inside the shop door.
As the topless man starts launching the bicycle in to the window customers start to shout and swear in shock.
Calls to ‘ring the police’ are made as trapped customers panic and staff gather around the door to protect them.
A security guard attempts to calm the man by repeating ‘stop’ and gesturing for him to put the bicycle down.
And a display of chocolate boxes can be seen scattered on the floor after being knocked over in the earlier commotion.
The man, whose bare chest is visible when the person filming moves closer to the door, hits the glass with the palm of his hand as he tries to intimidate the workers.
A female staff member is on the phone to police as her male colleague tells everyone they need to move back further inside the shop.
A row of trolleys are moved to block the entrance to the shop after the man smashes through both bottom panes of glass on the door. He then starts smashing the top panes
The video skips forward and shows him smashing through the top panes – prompting shouts of distress from customers.
Scotland Yard said officers attended the scene after reports of a man causing criminal damage.
‘It was reported that a man was using a bicycle to smash the glass door at the front of the store,’ the force said.
‘A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of affray. He has been taken into custody. Enquiries continue.’
The attack came just two days before Notting Hill Carnival – an annual event held to celebrate Black British culture – is set to begin.
More than one million people from across the world will descend on Portobello Road on Monday for a 5.6km parade through the streets of Notting Hill.
But the carnival kicks off tomorrow with a day of family-friendly events including workshops and a children’s parade.
