The Chamber for Tourism Industry Ghana has indicated that news of a GHS55 million injection into the tourism industry is a welcoming one as it will significantly boost the fortunes of the sector.

Earlier this week, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal announced that the amount which is from the World Bank will be made available from next week.

Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, Prince Ntiamoah Boampong stated that since the tourism sector has been one of the worst hit by the pandemic, he is confident that the cash injection will go a long way to help the sector get back on its feet.
“We are very happy to hear this news coming from the World Bank. The Ghana Enterprise Agency and the Ministry of Tourism have really done a great job by getting this grant from the World Bank for the tourism sector. The tourism sector was the worst affected when it came to the COVID-19, although other sectors were affected, so we have been calling on the government and other donor agencies for a very long time to support the industry. So news like this is great and welcoming news.”

“Data from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) shows that international visits have really dropped significantly and so if the sector will see a lot of activity it will come from capital injection like this one. This grant that has been given to the tourism industry will be able to help them get back to business,” he added.

According to the Ministry, the announcement follows discussions the Ghana Enterprises Agency, had with the World Bank and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The money will be limited to COVID-19 Response grants, SME grants and site upgrade grants.

The tourism industry continues to grapple with the impact of the pandemic, as it was one of the worst-hit.

Although the country’s international airspace is now open to allow in international tourists, who are the main clients of the sector, the industry is still yet to get out of the woods.
