The woman had abandoned her own vehicle at the rest area before leaving in the stolen Toyota Tacoma, according to the sheriff. The sheriff said detectives were notified that the stolen Tacoma was seen getting on the Northbound Causeway bridge heading back toward St. Tammany. They sheriff said several officers respond to the north end of the bridge in an attempt to intercept the stolen vehicle. The stolen truck was seen exiting the bridge, when the driver led deputies on a chase on Highway 190, according to the sheriff. The sheriff said the chase ended after the driver entered a parking lot of a gas station just north of Interstate 12. The driver was identified as Regan Collins and was taken into custody, according to the sheriff. She was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated flight from an officer and driving under suspension. An additional charge of possession of methamphetamine is pending after suspected methamphetamine was discovered inside the vehicle Collins abandoned at the rest area, according to the sheriff. “This was a crime of opportunity,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Please never leave an unattended vehicle unlocked and running no matter how short of time you think you are going to be gone.”
